The remains of the large Hemlock tree will probably be at the base of the waterfall for some time to come. Notice that the bottom 15 feet of the tree trunk had been hollowed out by insects.

The difficulty of removing trees from gullies like this probably explains why some of these old growth trees survived the land clearing of the 19th amd 20th century.
