Danger!


Please be careful if you hike in waterfall gullies. If you do not have the proper experience, equipment and judgment, you run the risk of serious injury or death. Here are just some of the potential threats:

  • You can lose your footing on slippery, slimy rocks and be seriously injured or killed.
  • You can fall from the edge of a waterfall or gully and be seriously injured or killed.
  • Rock ledges can crumble and cause you to fall and you may be seriously injured or killed.
  • Trees, rocks and ice can fall on you and you may be seriously injured or killed.
  • You can fall into the stream or pools and drown. 
  • Hikers above you can dislodge rocks and trees that can fall on you resulting in serious injury or death
  • Allergic reactions to poisonous plants, insect bites, or bee stings can be serious or life threatening.
  • You may encounter wild animals who might feel trapped in the confined space of a waterfall gully and may attack you resulting in severe injury or death.
  • If you get wet, you can suffer from hypothermia, even in warmer weather, which can result in permanent disability or death
Poison Ivy
  • If you are injured or become ill, help may not be readily available. Rescue operations may be very difficult and expensive and you may have to pay for these expenses. If rescue is not possible, you may die.
  • Ice formations can collapse when you walk or climb on them. If you fall and become trapped beneath the ice, you will probably die. 
  • Ice formations high above can collapse without warning and fall on you causing serious injury or death.
  • Ice jams and log jams can collapse suddenly releasing a flash flood that can sweep you to your death.
  • Sudden rainstorms can cause flash flooding that can sweep you to your death.
  • Logs and rocks can shift suddenly when you walk or climb on them, causing you to fall or falling on you, resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Snow, ice, or mud can avalanche and knock you down and bury you causing severe injury or death. 
  • Falling on broken glass, jagged metal, and other trash can cause serious wounds.
  • You may be shot by hunters or careless target shooters who do not think people would be hiking in a wild gully.
  • Other dangers or risks not mentioned here may result in severe injury or death.
